A wall belongs to everyone who walks past it.
Drawn on site. Scaled by grid. Painted in layers and sealed against sun and rain. No vinyl, no printed panels, nothing that peels in two years.
The commission
Sixty years of textbooks, back on the wall.
Balbharati has printed Maharashtra's school textbooks for sixty years. For its diamond jubilee we painted the books back onto the building — the shops, stations, courtyards and night skies a child meets first in a reader, at the size of a wall.
How it's made
Four stages, every time.
Site visit
We come to the wall, measure it, read the surface, and watch how the light crosses it through the day.
Sketch and colour
A drawing and a colour study to scale, before any paint is opened. This is the stage to change your mind.
Scaling up
The approved drawing gridded and transferred by hand at full size. This stage is drawing, not tracing.
Paint and seal
Painted in layers, then sealed. Exterior walls get a UV-stable coat, and you get care notes with it.
